A Chinese character called Lan from a super early Taiwan produced 2-D fighting game, Super Fighter impressed me a ton (with emphasis: back then). I was convinced that the Chinese guy in Tempest should be a classy fighter with a traditional design and a ponytail. Then on paper it looked just like Ranma, that was when I threw in elements of another Chinese character I absolutely loved from Saber, Sword, and Smile - a powerful but insane man with arms and legs cuffed to reduce his destruction strength.
